MySpace Erases 29,000 Sex Offenders
It’s now being reported in The Register and elsewhere that MySpace has “detected and deleted” almost 30,000 weenie waggers from its membership.
One of the comments on the Register article asks simply, “How do they know [who’s a sex offender]? Is there a box you can check?”
This is a good question. It wouldn’t be hard to cross ref sex offender databases with MS registrants, but that’s only useful if you naively assume pervs input real info when exposing themselves on MySpace.
MySpace has two kinds of users: the ones who crave recognition, and the ones who thrive in the dark places. The latter perhaps might not be entirely trustworthy in terms of self-identification as trench coat tricksters.
It’s not hard to put up a fake MySpace profile. My dog has one, and he’s definitely a sex offender, at least according to the next door neighbors and their crew of annoying baby mutterdoodles.
So how do they know? How do you really know anything about anybody on MySpace? How much of MySpace’s traffic is generated by certified wang danglers?
