Spring is Here: Time for The Recyclery
Now that the ghastly winter seems to be petering out, it’s time to get on your bike and ride. To get a serviceable bike without paying a freakin’ fortune, visit the Re-Cyclery in San Ran Rafael. You might pick up a handy used bike and do a good turn to Trips for Kids in the process.
Trips for Kids was incorporated in 1988 to give disadvantaged children in the Bay Area an opportunity get on a mountain bike and enjoy a ride outside city limits.
The organization later gave birth to the Re-Cyclery, a destination for old bikes and parts that puts them together again in the form of machines you yourself can purchase.
The selection of used bike parts at the Re-Cyclery is impressive, but not so much as the expertise of the bike mechanics.
Policy states that the bike maestros don’t work on your bike beyond installing parts you buy, but as the sign says, there’s a chance they might do other work if you ask nicely.
In any case, there’s no telling what wisdom you can find in the mechanics, including cycle surgeon Michael Bower, marathon runner and overall madman whose blog can be found here. (All marathon runners get honorary madman or madwoman status in my book.)
You would do well to visit the Re-Cyclery for any of these purposes:
- Make a tax-deductible donation of a bike or many other needed items.
- Buy a new old bike that’s really put together and is a lot less expensive than the two-wheeled jalopy you’d get a corporate bike emporium.
- Look through the selection of parts and find a used wheel, derailleur, wheel, cassette or whatever without having to get it on eBay.
Check the website for hours. The Re-Cyclery is closed on Mondays.
