Steve Ballmer–the new Uncle Fester?

by Paul on July 31st, 2006

The Addams Family’s Uncle Fester . . . . . The Gates’ Family’s Uncle Steve

Considering Frankensteve’s notorious propensity for running amok, it’s scary to think of the man-monster taking an Ahab-like position at Microsoft’s helm.

In an interview gerned at ValleyWag and elsewhere, the Wall Street Journal recounted his comparison of himself to Bill Gates via Mao Zedong and Chairman Mao. Maybe Steve isn’t too well versed in history, but Ballmer seems to think he’ll make a much more world-threatening totalitarian enemy to capitalism and free speech than Bill Gates was. Uh, okay, way to spin a compliment for all involved.

But those who overcame their laughter and continued reading the WSJ piece had their fears of world dominion through diabolical genius thoroughly assuaged. Here is Ballmer’s take on Microsoft:

“We grew up with one business model as our fundamental revenue-generation muscle: we sell something, you pay us for it. And we are building new muscle. We’re building a consumer subscription but, significantly, an advertising muscle. We grew up with a certain distribution model, which tended to be CDs and disks in the old days; we’re building a new distribution model, which tends to be more online.”

Pure genius. That’s the kind of cutting edge samurai zen PokeDong rope-a-dope thinking that puts $8 billion in your IRA.

What’ll he do next–start a blog?
