Supervisor Ed Jew: Help Me, Mr. Wizard!

by Paul on January 26th, 2008

Former San Francisco supervisor and bungling shakedown artist Ed Jew has moved to have federal fraud charges against him dropped.

Aside from lying about his residence to qualify to run for Supervisor, Jew is accused of taking $84,000 in cash while shaking down businessmen trying to open pudding franchises.

(See StarkedSF’s FBI Avoidance Tips for Ed Jew.)

The pleadings claim that Steven Gruel, the attorney Jew first hired, had actually started the investigation of Jew in the first place. Gruel purportedly went to the FBI in the bag-full-of-cash matter before being hired to defend the supervisor.

The move to drop the federal charges is a transparent effort to get off scot free, as the civil actions were dropped when Jew finally resigned from his position as Supe.

It remains unclear exactly what dealings Gruel had with the FBI, but this latest chapter in Jew’s political riches-to-rags is a cheerful reminder of how dangerous the S.F. political shark tank is for those who are ill-prepared to dive in.

Jew apparently donned a diving suit made of steak tartare before he leaped in. Bon Appetit!
