TNT Report: Health Insurance To Become Mandatory in California

by Paul on April 27th, 2008

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced a bold new plan to make it illegal not to have health insurance.

“The system works great with cars,” the Governor told the press, “so what’s the problem with people?”

Under the proposed system, which will bring new sources of premium income to HMOs and health insurers, citizens of the state will receive a fine-and possibly jail time–if spot checks reveal that health insurance is not in place.

A special health police will question citizens who appear ill, and those who have a malady without applicable coverage will receive an initial “fix it” ticket, with heavy fines and time in prison in the mix for those who refuse to comply by obtaining coverage.

Critiques of the measure were ignored by health insurance providers and the media.

Schwarzenegger is said to be contemplating an analogous proposal that would make it illegal to be the victim of a crime.
